A mother who tried to cover up the fact her son had murdered her boyfriend has been jailed. Nancy Smith, 48, has been locked up for perverting the course of justice, after she came up with an 'elaborate' story to try and deflect the police's attention away from her son Bernard Ward, then 17.
Ward, now 18, was found guilty of murder after stabbing Smith's partner, 52-year-old Vincent Wilson, to the head following a row in the house they shared on Silverdale Avenue in Irlam, Salford.
Manchester Crown Court heard Smith told police the man responsible, a dark haired man who wore a white t-shirt and blue jeans, had left the area before she saw Mr Wilson, who walked out of house with a knife protruding from his head.
