Hip hop legend dies aged 55 after tragic cancer battle

Samantha Lawrence, one half of the Wee Papa Girl Rappers, has tragically passed away at 55. Known as TY Tim onstage, she and her sister formed an unforgettable duo that soared to fame with their hit Wee Rule in the late 80s.

Samantha lost her battle with secondary cancer, leaving the hip-hop community mourning a trailblazer.The family made the heart-wrenching announcement in a statement which read: "It is with great sadness that we announce that beloved sister and mother Samantha Lawrence passed away on Sunday." Sandra revealed that her sister passed peacefully in London, reports the Mirror.

DJ Dave Pearce shared his memories of Samantha, saying, "Sam was part of a defining and groundbreaking era of trailblazing British female rappers who against the odds conquered the UK charts alongside the likes of Cookie Crew.

It was a really exciting time for me and always a pleasure to work with them on my Radio London hip-hop show back in the day, their positive energy was infectious." Pearce also praised their creative flair, adding: "Always keen to experiment, they fused dancehall with reggae with Wee Rule and stepped into the house arena courtesy of Kevin Saunderson's remix of Heat It Up." In his moving tribute, he remarked: "Through her success, Sam will have inspired others to follow their dreams.
