*****There’s a growing area of research for bipolar disorder. Called metabolic psychiatry, this emerging field is rapidly gaining attention for its focus on how our body’s metabolism and energy systems impact brain health, introducing innovative strategies beyond traditional methods.
The term metabolic psychiatry was first coined in 2015 by Shebani Sethi, MD, psychiatrist and founder of the Metabolic Psychiatry Clinic, a first-of-its-kind specialty medical clinic at Stanford University in California.
One such strategy is ketogenic metabolic therapy, which uses a high-fat, low-carb diet to support brain health and potentially manage mental health conditions effectively.
Interestingly, ketogenic therapy isn’t new; it has been used for more than a century to treat severe epilepsy. Now, its potential for helping with conditions like bipolar disorder is being explored more than ever, offering new hope to those affected.
