At Stepping Hill hospital, a £130m repair bill is looming. Buildings have been demolished over safety concerns, light fittings have crashed from the ceiling into a delivery ward.
On occasion, doctors have ben forced to wade through flooded corridors in order to see patients. Now, MPs have ben left outraged the Stockport hospital has been ‘excluded’ from desperately-needed government funding - and instead been ‘pushed even further down the pecking order by the government’.
Mark Hunter, the leader of Stockport Council, added: “Parts of Stepping Hill Hospital are literally falling down, and the situation is totally unacceptable.
We deserve better from central government, and I repeat my invitation to the Secretary of State to come and see for himself the dire circumstances which patients and our dedicated doctors and nurses are having to tolerate.” Stepping Hill Hospital did not qualify for a scheme to rebuild ageing hospitals which was left by the Conservatives, and then taken over last year when Labour came into power.
