Premier League chief executive Richard Masters says the 2020/21 season will get underway “towards the end of August or very early September” in a best-case scenario.

The 2019/20 campaign has been on hold since mid-March amid the coronavirus pandemic, with Leicester ’s 4-0 win over Aston Villa on March 9 the last outing before its suspension.

But after teams returned to non-contact training last week, Masters recently insisted top-flight officials are “as confident as we can be” about getting matches back up and running in June.

Their Project Restart plans also received a huge boost when the Premier League revealed on Saturday night that only two out of 996 tests came back positive during a second round of COVID-19 testing.
