'Special' midwife, 30, dies of coronavirus two weeks after the death of her dad

A beloved and respected NHS midwife, whose father died just a few weeks ago, has lost her life to Covid-19. She was just 30 years old.

Safaa Alam was described as an amazing midwife” by colleagues at Birmingham Women's Hospital, where she had helped to deliver hundreds of babies.

Safaa’s husband Shazad said: “She was my childhood sweetheart and we grew up together and married over four years ago. “My years with Saf have been filled with love, fun and adventure; this was just the beginning of our lives together.” He added that Safaa was “very passionate about her job as a midwife and would often dedicate more than what was required.” Safaa started her professional career as a nurse, before training as a midwife at Birmingham Women’s
