The nationwide call for NHS volunteers to help fight coronavirus in the UK has seen 170,000 people sign up in less than 16 hours.

Health Secretary Matt Hancock said volunteers would help boost the government's ability to protect those most vulnerable to coronavirus and provide vital support for medics, reports the Mirror.

Anyone who is over 18, fit and healthy and free of coronavirus symptoms can help. He said on Tuesday: "We are seeking a quarter of a million volunteers, people in good health, to help the NHS, for shopping, for delivery of medicines and to support those who are shielded to protect their own health."
