West Lothian mum diagnosed with cancer on her birthday celebrates being 10 years free of disease
A West Lothian mum who discovered she had cancer on her birthday marked the milestone of being 10 years clear of the disease by launching Race for Life in Scotland’s capital.
It was a special moment as fitness instructor Jill MacGregor kicked off Cancer Research UK’s Race for Life by sounding the horn to send more than 1,300 people on their way at the event in Holyrood Park.More than £147,000 was raised in total at Race for Life Edinburgh, vital funds which will enable scientists to find new ways to prevent, diagnose and treat cancer helping to save more lives.Every year around 34,600 people are diagnosed with cancer in Scotland.Jill, from Uphall, endured surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy after being diagnosed with breast cancer on November 28, 2013.Her treatment finished in June 2014.
Now back to full fitness, she runs 14 Glow exercise classes across Edinburgh every week. She later had the words live, love, laugh tattooed on her chest close to where she had the cancer surgery which saved her life.
Jill, now 58, said: “It was some birthday present to find out I had cancer. “But once there was a treatment plan in place and I knew more about what lay ahead I felt more in control.
