The Bishop of Manchester, David Walker, has called for the sacking of Boris Johnson's chief of staff Dominic Cummings as the row over the controversial adviser's movements during lockdown refused to abate.
The Prime Minister was today accused by critics of risking the Government's efforts to combat Covid-19 in order to defend his senior aide following allegations that he repeatedly breached lockdown restrictions.
Mr Johnson chose to front the daily Downing Street coronavirus briefing to publicly back Mr Cummings, saying he had "acted responsibly, legally and with integrity" by driving 260 miles to County Durham to isolate and that "any parent would frankly understand what he did".
