Norovirus is a highly contagious bug, but there are ways to protect yourself and your loved ones if someone in your home gets sick. The NHS has warned that norovirus, which is also known as the winter vomiting disease, can be spread through close contact with an infected person, touching surfaces or objects contaminated by the virus and then touching your mouth.
Food prepared or handled by someone who's ill can also become a hotbed for the virus. Despite families' best efforts to stay healthy, alcohol hand gels won't kill the norovirus bacteria.
However, there are some tactics to fight it, starting with avoiding situations that could help it spread, like close contact with potentially infected people or surfaces. This includes linen or surfaces contaminated with vomit or diarrhoea from a person with norovirus, reports the Mirror.
The NHS recommends handling contaminated linen and clothing with gloves if possible and washing them with detergent at a piping hot 60 degrees Celsius.
