Cancer risk linked to six lifestyle factors that may influence 30 forms of disease

Over 30 types of cancer may be preventable by making certain lifestyle changes, according to new research.Cancer continues to be a serious problem for people in Scotland and research shows that overall cases are continuing to rise.

While living a healthy life is recommended to lower the risk of becoming ill, certain factors and habits may play a bigger role in cancer development than previously realised.Researchers from the American Cancer Society have identified the common habits that attribute to four in ten cancer cases in the United States.

These same factors were also linked to about one-half of cancer deaths in the country, according to research published in journal CA: A Cancer Journal for Clinicians last week.The factors include cigarette smoking, excess body weight, alcohol consumption, physical inactivity, poor diet, and infections.

To come to conclusions, scientists analysed American health data, looking at hundreds of thousands reports of cancer cases and deaths in those aged over 30 the US in 2019.Cigarette smoking was by far the leading risk factor, contributing to nearly 20 per cent of all cancer cases and 30 per cent of all cancer deaths in the United States.
