Kyle Ayers suffers excruciating pain every day with a crippling brain disease - it's far from funny yet the US comedian manages to make it so.Ayers takes you on his journey to date from his discovery that he has trigeminal neuralgia, known as suicide disease because so many sufferers take their own lives because of the horrendously painful neurological explosions in their heads. But just as his story gets too heavy or sad he hits you between the eyes with a cracking one-liner.

If he becomes unaware he is meandering too much into melancholy an audience member is primed to interject to get the comedy flowing once more. There is little need for interruption, however, because just as you begin to wonder if you will ever smile again Ayers delivers an absolute belter. The comedian is very self aware and has you laughing unexpectedly about signing his life away, 'death' on the operating table and writing his will.

But particular highlights were his bucket list and his swastika stitches.Ayers is still finding his feet a bit on his Edinburgh run and you can sense he is - unnecessarily - insecure in some of his material.

But expect him to get stronger and stronger as the Fringe continues. If you want bragging rights when he makes it big go and laugh at the man with brain disease now.• Runs until August 25. Don't miss the latest news from around Scotland and beyond. Sign up to our daily newsletter .
