Denise Welch has spoken about how a doctor told her that they didn’t know how she had survived with such low oestrogen levels.

Actress and Loose Women star Denise was speaking on the Number with Darren Kennedy podcast about her experiences of postnatal depression and what it was like when she first started speaking about mental health in the 1990s.

She explained: “People just don’t understand hormones, you know it took me 20 years to have someone even listen to the fact that I, as a woman, we give birth to a human being that there may just be some kind of flux in the hormones that goes on there to produce an actual human from your nether regions. “It took me 20 years to find a doctor through the actress Sarah Lancashire [and] Darren Little.

Darren knew I was very poorly and he told me that Sarah who has a similar illness to me…She recommended this [doctor] and he tested me and said you are so deficient in oestrogen I don’t know how you’ve survived.” Earlier in the podcast Denise, 66, had also gone into detail about what it was like to speak out about mental health at a time of low awareness in society.
