When Ruth Calder first landed in Shetland, she was convinced it would be a fleeting visit before returning to her bustling London life.
Yet, as the latest instalment of the hit murder-mystery series kicks off this week, we find Ruth laying down roots on the islands where she grew up – but appearances can be deceiving. "Calder has made the decision to stay.
She has committed to Shetland and she’s bought a house... although she hasn’t actually unpacked yet!" hints Ashley Jensen, who steps into her second season as the formidable DI, following Douglas Henshall's departure last year. "I think after reconnecting with Cal and with her brother, there’s been this almost magnetic pull for Calder to resolve something unsettled there." Meanwhile, Calder’s colleague Alison ‘Tosh’ McIntosh is embracing her recent promotion, though her joy is short-lived when her personal and professional worlds collide as her friend Annie disappears.
Tosh fears that there may be more to the situation than meets the eye. Alison O’Donnell, who portrays DI Tosh in the series, shares insights into her character's development: "Tosh is now a fully-fledged DI," she says. "What’s happening in her private life escalates and it becomes a police matter, so there’s this conflict of interest for her there.Tosh is quite single-minded about her job and she’ll always prioritise that, so that is going to test her friendships and it’s a difficult path for her to tread." The plot thickens as Tosh and her colleague Calder search for Annie and her son Noah, only to encounter a twist with the arrival of Euan Rossi, played by Ian Hart, known for his role in Harry Potter.
