Health officials have launched an investigation to determine why cases of tuberculosis - an infection commonly associated with the industrial revolution and Victorian times - have increased in England.

There was an 11 per cent rise in TB cases in England in 2023 compared with 2022, according to provisional data. The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) said there were 4,850 cases last year, which was higher than pre-pandemic levels.

The largest increases have been in the urban centres of London, the north west and west midlands, officials said. But there have also been increases in the south west and north east, where TB incidence is low.
