NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s announcement of complete lockdown across India in the wake of the coronavirus scare this week had 197 million viewers glued to their television screens across 201 channels, according to data from the Broadcast Audience Research Council (BARC).
BARC is the country’s television viewership monitoring agency. Tuesday's pan-India lockdown announcement clocked in more viewers than the janata curfew announcement on 19 March (83 million viewers across 19 channels), Modi’s address on Article 370 in August (65 million viewers across 163 channels), the bringing in of demonetization in November 2016 (57 million viewers across 114 channels) and the IPL (Indian Premier League) finals that had notched up 133
