NEW DELHI: State governments in Delhi and Uttar Pradesh (UP) have started special buses for migrants who were stuck in the national capital due to the lockdown and were instead walking hundreds of kilometres to reach home.
The central government has asked the highway authorities and toll operators to help out migrants who are walking back. To curtail the spread of Covid-19, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday announced a three-week nationwide lockdown in which only essential services are being allowed to function.
The move had a direct impact on the employment of those in the informal sector. With state transport buses and trains not in service until 15 April, migrants, most of them from Bihar and UP, began to take the long walk back
