Prime Minister Boris Johnson has written to every household in the UK to urge them to stay at home and obey the lockdown rules.

Mr Johnson, who is currently self-isolating after testing positive for coronavirus last week, warned 'things will get worse before they get better' as he stressed the need to ease pressure on the health service.

The letters will reach the doorsteps of 30 million households across the UK and are accompanied by a leaflet explaining the government's lockdown restrictions.

The letter campaign has cost the government around £5.8 million. I am writing to you to update you on the steps we are taking to combat coronavirus.
