Boris Johnson was reportedly “close to death” during his battle with coronavirus – as the Prime Minister thanked NHS staff for saving his life.

In a statement, Mr Johnson praised doctors and nurses at central London’s St Thomas’ Hospital who treated him in intensive care earlier in the week.

The 55-year-old, who is recovering in hospital, said in a short statement: “I can’t thank them enough. I owe them my life.” It comes as friends claim stricken Mr Johnson came close to death as he fought Covid-19, the Mail on Sunday reports, with Cabinet Ministers and aides reportedly praying for him.

Mr Johnson was first admitted to hospital on Sunday, April 5, before he was rushed to intensive care on Monday after his condition worsened.
