A Strangeways prisoner has died in hospital after contracting coronavirus, it has been confirmed. The 66-year-old man is the second inmate in the country to die after testing positive for COVID-19.

An 84-year-old man who was an inmate at HMP Littlehey in Cambridgeshire died in hospital on March 22 after contracting coronavirus.

A Prison Service spokesperson said: “A 66-year-old prisoner at HMP Manchester died in hospital on 26 March. Our thoughts are with his family at this time. “As with all deaths in custody, there will be an independent investigation by the Prisons and Probation Ombudsman.” An Minister of Justice spokesperson was unable to confirm if this is the same individual who become the first prisoner in the country to test
