Cases of tuberculosis (TB) are on the rise in England, according to the latest data from the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA).
Health bosses warn the disease remains a “serious public health issue” in the country as rates of infection rose from 8.5 per 100,000 population in 2023 to 9.5 per 100,000 in 2024.
The news comes as the US state of Kansas faces an unprecedented outbreak of TB, with Kansas City recording dozens of infections and at least two deaths.
The ongoing outbreak has caused 67 active infections and 79 "latent," or inactive since 2024. For people with inactive infections, TB is detected in the body but it doesn’t make people sick.
