PHILADELPHIA - Temple University announced it will pay the funeral costs for slain officer Sgt. Chris Fitzgerald and pay for the tuition's of his five children if they attend Temple.Fitzgerald, 31, was shot to death on Saturday night during a struggle with a suspect later identified as 18-year-old Miles Pfeffer.

The teen was arrested at his mother's house less that 24-hours after the deadly shooting and faces a slew of charges, including murder. "It's unfathomable how his joy has led to so much pain for all who knew and loved him," Temple University President Jason Wingard said.

I've met Officer Fitzgerald's family, and his wife and parents shared with me, separately, how much Chris loved working at Temple, saying, "It was his joy."MORE COVERAGEFitzgerald was posthumously promoted to the rank of sergeant on Thursday, according to a university official.

Two viewings services for Sgt. Fitzgerald will happen Thursday night and Friday morning and his funeral mass will be held Friday morning the Cathedral Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul.

PHILADELPHIA - Hours after a batch of recruits graduated the police academy to join Temple's police force, two incidents happened on campus that underscored the safety challenges facing the school. According to Temple police, a person with a gun was spotted by a security officer inside the cafeteria of Morgan Hall and was arrested by responding officers. Around the same time, police responded to a report of two individuals firing pellet guns at people near the intersection of Willington and Berks streets. Authorities have not reported any arrests. Temple University added eight new officers to its force on Friday.

MANHATTAN, New York - A civilian helped catch an armed suspect Thursday, who was fleeing from police in New York City. According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office Southern District of New York, the suspect, Jason Fleming, was arrested on March 16 after brandishing loaded weapons following a dispute in a crowded bodega in Manhattan’s Chelsea neighborhood.Surveillance video shows Fleming, 39, outside the bodega pulling back his coat momentarily to reveal a rifle that had been swung over his shoulder.Police officers then approached the suspect after a witness called 911, and Fleming took off running down the sidewalk. PHILADELPHIA - The tight-knit running community that once embraced slain Temple police officer Chris Fitzgerald carried on their weekly run with a heavy heart. A group of avid runners gathered along Kelly Drive Wednesday for their weekly 5-mile-run without Officer Fitzgerald, who was shot to death during a struggle with a suspect Saturday night. Officer Fitzgerald was an active member of the Swagger House Run Club and the Philadelphia Chapter of Black Men Run. "It’s all about brotherhood, all about unity, it’s all about health," Lawrence Harrington from Black Men Run, Philadelphia told FOX 29.
