On Wednesday, automobile makers reported a huge drop in March sales. Both market leader Maruti Suzuki India Ltd’s and Hyundai Motor India Ltd’s sales fell by almost half.
Commercial vehicle makers were hit harder, with Ashok Leyland Ltd’s dispatches down 90% and Tata Motors Ltd’s by 84%. It was only on 24 March that the country closed down, but the freeze seems to have cut off discount sales planned for the end of March, just before Bharat Stage-IV vehicles were to be withdrawn.
