Coronavirus hospital death toll in UK rises by 586 to 21,678

The number of people who have died in UK hospitals after contracting coronavirus has reached 21,678. The latest update from the Department of Health reports that the figure is up by 586 from 21,092 at the same point yesterday.

The number of confirmed cases of coronavirus has risen by 3,996 to 161,145 from 157,149 at the same point yesterday. More than 763,000 tests have now been carried out in the UK with 43,453 concluding yesterday.

The government says testing capacity is now up to 73,400 tests per day and insists that a target of 100,000 by the end of the month can be met.
