Emergency services descended on a busy Tameside street following a gas leak. Stockport Road, in Ashton-under-Lyne, was closed this afternoon (September 13) while fire crews and Cadent gas engineers checked the scene.

The Manchester Evening News understands the gas leak came from a kebab shop. Part of Stockport Road was taped off earlier this afternoon, with police also in attendance, before emergency services lifted the cordon.

Firefighters and Cadent engineers remain at the scene. No major evacuation took place. READ MORE: Met Office verdict on whether Northern Lights will be seen in Greater Manchester tonight A Cadent spokesperson said: "Our engineers were called in after reports of a smell of gas inside a property.
