Lockdown-flouting drivers warned of random checks by police this weekend

Police will be on the prowl for any motorist making a non-essential journey on this warm weekend, Brits are being warned. Officers will be randomly checking vehicles to make sure they are taking an essential journey, and not looking to flout lockdown rules to bask in the summer sun.

With details being leaked of Boris Johnson's plans to begin easing the lockdown rules, the country celebrating an early May bank holiday to mark the 75th anniversary of VE Day and a blissfully sunny weekend, Merseyside Police fear Brits may be tempted into travelling for anything other than an essential need.

Anyone behind the wheel or out-and-about this weekend could be stopped at random, as the force urged people to stay at home.
