Married At First Sight UK's Mel Schilling says she's feeling hopeful while she continues her treatment for cancer. The relationship expert on the hit Channel 4 show revealed she is "feeling positive and confident about the future" as she goes through chemotherapy.

In December 2023, the 52-year-old Australian native had surgery in a London hospital to take out a tumour after being given a diagnosis of colon cancer.

Mel is working with a charity called Occtopus, The Oxford Colon Cancer Trust, to raise awareness surrounding bowel cancer in an effort to reduce people's fears of the subject. "It is really important to me to demystify a bowel cancer diagnosis and put people at ease about it," she said.

She continued: "It doesn't always mean a negative outcome or a drastic impact on your everyday life, so don't assume the worst if you start noticing any of the bowel cancer symptoms and don't let a fear of it delay you from getting it checked out." On the subject of her surgery, Mel added: "My surgery was a 90 minute key-hole procedure under general anaesthetic and spinal block." After the procedure, Mel remained under medical care in the hospital for five days until she could eat and use the bathroom as normal.
