Sports Direct has said it will close its stores in a major U-turn after initially claiming staff were essential workers and planned to continue store operations during the coronavirus pandemic.

Politicians hit out at company majority owner Mike Ashley with Labour demanding the chief "take some responsibility" and "shut up shop".

Their comments came after the Prime Minister ordered non-essential shops to close as Britain entered a lockdown to try and stop the spread of COVID-19.

Management justified keeping stores open on the basis that selling sporting and fitness equipment makes the company a vital asset during a national shutdown, according to an email seen by the PA news agency.
