NHS Nightingale coronavirus hospital in London temporarily closes month after opening

NHS Nightingale, the flagship coronavirus hospital opened in east London only last month, will no longer be admitting new patients, it has been announced.

The facility in the ExCel Centre in London's former Docklands had space for 4,000 beds but has hardly been called into action.

Reports say the facility will be mothballed but kept on hand in case of a second peak in Covid-19 cases. A spokesperson for Prime Minister Boris Johnson confirmed the news on Monday afternoon. "It is not likely that, in the coming days, we will need to be admitting patients to NHS Nightingale London while coronavirus in the capital remains under control," they said. "That is obviously a very positive thing.
