The streets of Manchester city centre have been photographed eerily quiet. And the bleak images are set to be replicated in the coming weeks after the closure of all pubs, bars, restaurants and theatres was confirmed by the Prime Minister Boris Johnson today.

Greater Manchester's motorway network, meanwhile, has seen a huge reduction in daily traffic. The AA said cancelled football matches and other major events would make this and following weekends 'a strange experience out on the road'.

The motoring association reported that even with school closures, roads across Greater Manchester were far 'quieter during the day' as families stay behind closed doors due to the spread of coronavirus.
