Kate Middleton is thought to be "doing well" following her abdominal surgery, after a shock announcement worried royal fans. The Princess of Wales, 42, had the operation on Wednesday at The London Clinic in Marylebone, with Kensington Palace making a statement that she would be stepping back from royal duties until after Easter.

Kate is expected to stay in hospital for 10 to 14 days, longer than is usually advised after abdominal surgery, and will then take two to three months for her recovery once she is back in Windsor.

Here’s everything you need to know about abdominal surgery... What is abdominal surgery? Major abdominal surgery is when you have had either a large cut in your abdomen or complex keyhole surgery. This could be due to bowel, bladder, vascular or another type of procedure, according to the NHS.

Why did Kate have abdominal surgery? Kensington Palace did not disclose the reason for Kate's operation. A spokesperson said: "The Princess of Wales appreciates the interest this statement will generate. "She hopes that the public will understand her desire to maintain as much normality for her children as possible; and her wish that her personal medical information remains private. “Kensington Palace will, therefore, only provide updates on Her Royal Highness’ progress when there is significant new information to share." However, it's understood her surgery was not cancer-related.
