He was Foreign Secretary from 2016 to 2018 and Mayor of London from 2008 to 2016. Boris Johnson has been accused of telling Italy's Prime Minister he wanted 'herd immunity' when they discussed the coronavirus pandemic in March.

That would involve letting a large number of people to catch coronavirus allowing them to develop antibodies to it, limiting the risk of it spreading among the community.

In March chief scientific adviser Patrick Vallance had said the UK would need about 60% of people to be infected to gain herd immunity and reduce transmission.

He later said he was explaining how the scientific theory worked and that it was never the UK's plan. But ministers and Mr Johnson's advisor Dominic Cummings have consistently denied this was ever part of their coronavirus response.
