Couple adapt face masks to allow deaf people lip read

People around the world have been wearing face masks as part of the response to the Covid-19 pandemic. However, while the masks slow the spread of the virus, they can create issues for people who rely on lip reading to communicate.

A couple in Indonesia who are both deaf came up with an innovative solution to this problem. Faizah Badaruddin and Imam Sarosos have designed a mask with a plastic viewing window over the mouth area that allows people read lips.

Ms Badaruddin, who was born with total hearing loss, decided to adapt the traditional cloth mask alongside her husband, who is also deaf, from their tailoring workshop in Makassar, on Indonesia's Sulawesi Island.
