Jamie Dornan, the star of The Tourist, has revealed that he's "lucky to be alive" after a scary encounter with toxic caterpillars during a holiday in Portugal.

The actor, 41, was enjoying a lads' trip with friends last year, including Good Morning Britain presenter Gordon Smart, when he began experiencing symptoms similar to those of a heart attack, likely caused by the "toxic" insects.

Gordon, 43, also felt some of these symptoms while they were at their golf resort. After being asked by doctors about their alcohol consumption the previous night, it was concluded that their discomfort was due to contact with hairy processionary caterpillars. "It turns out we'd brushed up against hairy processionary caterpillars and have been very lucky to come out of that one alive," Gordon shared.

On The Good, the Bad and the Unexpected, Gordon detailed their experience as he recalled how he had initially had a fantastic first day at the hotel, but less than 24 hours later, had begun to feel a "tingling in his left hand and tickling in his left arm." The tiny hairs on these caterpillars contain an irritating protein called thaumetopoein, which can cause painful skin, eye and throat irritations, rashes, and in rare cases, allergic reactions.
