The Government has confirmed a sharp rise in the daily number of deaths involving coronavirus as 627 fatalities involving Covid-19 were recorded in the last 24 hours.

The Department for Health and Social Care confirmed today that: "As of 5pm on 11 May, of those tested positive for coronavirus, across all settings, 32,692 have sadly died." That is a rise of 627 deaths in that period, and is a significant increase on the 210 deaths announced on Monday.

However, the sharp rise is most likely explained by a backlog of under reported cases during the long weekend. The news comes after the latest data from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) shed new light on just how extreme the disparity in Covid-19 deaths is across age ranges.
