Many people are familiar with well-known cancer treatments like chemotherapy, a Morris dancing granddad is receiving a 'vaccine' designed for him personally to treat his life-threatening illness.
Richard Nelson, 73, is living with stage three bowel cancer, but his immune system is now being trained to identify and attack any new cancerous cells.
It's hoped that this new 'personalised' treatment - a series of injections - will prevent his cancer from returning. Mr Nelson, a retired college vice-principal from Timperley, Trafford, qualified for the trial after undergoing surgery to remove a tumour.
The trial treatment taking place at The Christie in Manchester, consisting of two injections five minutes apart, is referred to as a 'vaccine'.
