Kate Middleton could still make a surprise appearance at the King's official birthday festivities. Even as she undergoes preventative cancer treatment, the 42 year old Royal is thought to be weighing up joining the Buckingham Palace balcony spectacle post-Trooping the Colour ceremony if she feels up to it.

However, Kensington Palace confirmed yesterday that she wouldn't be actively participating in the final dress rehearsal leading up to the King's birthday bash on June 8, but didn't entirely dismiss her showing up at the main event the following week.Typically, as the colonel-in-chief of the Irish Guards, Kate would honour The Colonel's Review by saluting at the event. This second instalment of the ticketed Trooping the Colour series kicks off today with The Major General's Review at Horse Guards Parade.

However, insiders at the palace maintain that her resumption of official duties won't occur until physicians provide a clean bill of health and any attendance at Royal happenings will be hit-and-miss.

King Charles, who himself is undergoing treatment for cancer, has affirmed his presence at his capital city based birthday celebrations.
