Prince Michael of Greece, the first cousin of Prince Philip and the last remaining grandson of George I, has sadly passed away at the age of 85.The royal, who was a renowned writer and historian known as Michel De Gres, died in an Athens hospital, it was announced on Sunday, 28 July.The funeral for Prince Michael is set to take place in the Greek capital on Thursday, 1 August.
He was famously married to Marina Karella, an acclaimed painter and sculptor, for whom he renounced his right to the Greek throne in 1965.
Born in 1939, ahead of a significant shift in Europe and the Greek Royal Family, Michael was the only child of Prince Christopher and his second wife, Princess Francoise d'Oleans of France.
His father tragically died at just 51 in 1940 after suffering from a short illness, and his mother passed away in 1953, leaving him an orphan by the time he was 14.
