A Chinese propaganda outlet has defended the re-opening of controversial wet markets across the country. The coronavirus is thought to have originated at the Huanan Seafood Market in Wuhan after spreading among wild animals.
It was shut down in January after a cluster of patients came down with mystery pneumonia. Vendors sold a raft of animals including chickens, badgers, bamboo rats, hedgehogs, and snakes – often slaughtered in front of customers.
Other wet markets afterwards came under heavy scrutiny – with US officials calling for them to permanently shut down – and have recently begun to re-open.
The Global Times, owned by the Chinese Communist Party’s People’s Daily Newspaper, has since defended the move. In an “exclusive
