The UK's coronavirus death toll has increased by 176 in the past day. This brings the total number of Covid-19 fatalities in care homes, hospitals and the wider community to 39,904.
Today's increase is lower than yesterday's jump, when 359 deaths were announced. Some 220,057 tests were either completed or sent out in the past day, bringing the total to 5,005,565.
Revealing the latest deaths at today's Downing Street press conference, Transport Secretary Grant Shapps said the figures showed Covid-19 is still 'a very real threat.' Yesterday the World Health Organization said the UK had recorded more daily deaths than 27 EU countries combined.
